Frank Thomas is a MLB Hall of Famer, appearing as a first-ballot nominee. He is from Columbus, Georgia, where he was raised. Thomas would attend Auburn University after three years and a successful rewrite of most the records of Auburn baseball being associated with his name. He would be selected in the 1989 MLB draft by the Chicago White Sox, the 7th pick of the first round. He is widely regarded as one of baseball’s most feared and notorious batters of all time. Thomas played a full 19 seasons in the MLB, earning the nickname “The Big Hurt” after a star-studded career (Frank Thomas).
General Benning
Henry L. Benning is one of the most well accomplished and respected men to come out of the Southern region. He has had an astounding influence on not only the history of yesterday, but modern society. Fort Benning, a large military camp in Georgia, was established in his name because of the great service and leadership he provided for his country. Benning was a military leader of the Confederate Army during the time of the civil war, as most of the brightest generals were. He had a hand in many of the Confederate’s biggest and most important victories, although they ultimately lost the war. Following the war, he lost many of his assets due to the war, and would practice law until his death (Pou).
Flyers
Eugene Bullard was an African-American pilot hailing from Columbus, Georgia. Bullard was the first African-American military combat pilot in. He left the states to move to London, where he would partake in the first World War after he relocated in France. All of these pilots were African American, and so many of them accomplished feats that had never been done before they accomplished these feats. James Banning was the first pilot to fly across the whole of the United States. He had a caucasian pilot with years of experience help him with flying. Cornelius Coffey was another incredible pilot, and he helped find a non-university school for aviation. Coffey was the first black aviator with a piloting and mechanic’s license. His wife, Willa Brown, also accomplished great things. She was the first black woman to receive her pilot’s license in the U.S., and also ran for congress.
The Phenix City Story
While I had prior knowledge of the Phenix City story previous to reading it, I did not fully understand the utter turmoil the city was in. The city was run by corrupt politicians, being bribed for very little money. With this, almost anything went, becoming a lawless town out of a cowboy’s wildest dreams. If someone had a disagreement with another individual, one of them would surely soon be dead with no consequences. The Chattahoochee become a watery grave for hundreds of people, an astounding fact to think about. Prostitution and gambling were all over the city, with common townspeople standing no chance to rebel against the corruption that was ruining a once quiet, religious town. The most surprising thing of all was the “redneck mafia’ that controlled the city, killing as they please in broad daylight with no repercussions, a scary thing to think about.(McDowell).
Types of Students
During my brief few weeks at college, I have already encountered many different kinds of students. One of the most prominent types of students I see is the regular student who comes to class, does not say much, and goes about their day. This is the category I would fall into. I just come to class, get my work done, go home, and try to make it through each day. Some students, however, do this a different way; they simply decide not to come. I have already met different students who will not show up at all, and if they do make a rare appearance it is never on time, with the only day of their attendance being a test day. Another kind of student I have seen, is the athlete. These are athletes who play sports for the school, and I have experienced they might not necessarily be the smartest students, but they are always in class and on time.
Celebrating Me
I recently turned 19, and as much as I generally dislike attention, it is always nice to be reminded of all the people that love you with their birthday wishes. This may not seem like I am boasting, but I am proud of being able to have people I know who genuinely care for me. I think this speaks of my character that while being quiet and reserved, I still am able to make such strong connections with multiple people by being the most person I can. I think I am genuinely a good person that tries to show compassion and empathy to all people, as we as humans deserve. There is not much I am confident about, even much so boastful, but I pride myself in being patient and an understanding, caring individual. As a side note, I also enjoy writing and believe it is not overly difficult to labor through reading, although I know it is by no means as good as I wished it to be..
Horror Genre
I absolutely see the points King makes throughout his writing on sanity and insanity, and how it drives the horror genre. I also believe no one is completely sane, and there is a bit of insanity in every person. The horror genre allows people to live out any sick fantasy they crave, but would have mounds of consequences if partaken in reality. When someone sees a murderer or a person who has been deemed insane by society talk to themselves or “grimace” their face when no one is around, it is written off as insane behavior. The truth is, that this is not some abnormal behavior only the mentally insane do, but a human behavior that many people do everyday. So, when someone watches a horror movie with a character who kills, talks to themselves, and makes outrageous faces when alone, they are secretly relating to this character and watching him act in society in a way in which they never could (King).
Example of Kindness
The best example of kindness from a stranger I have seen was while I was at work involving a homeless man, a random woman, and a worker at the store. The woman wanted to buy the man ice cream after he commented about how he had not had it in maybe a decade. This was kind in itself because she did not have to do this, and could have just ignored the homeless man as most people do. Instead, she stopped and talked to him, and on top of that went and actually got him an ice cream. This is where the worker comes in, who stepped in and payed for the ice cream instead of the woman. These two random people came together to do a little thing for them for someone they have never met, but this moment meant so much to this man. These are the moments you are proud to be a part of
Rant
One thing that really annoys me is when people make mistakes driving. I know that everyone makes mistakes and the best way to learn is from these mistakes, but that does not mean I have to like it. I absolutely hate bad drivers who make stupid mistakes. Nothing makes me more frustrated than when someone drives in a passing lane slow and holds up traffic. Another thing that just irks me is when someone brakes on the highway when they do not need to break, slowing down traffic by making everyone behind them break. Driving is the most dangerous thing we do in everyday life, yet there are so many careless and just bad drivers in the world that it makes driving almost a gambling experience, rolling the dice on your life and thousands of dollars of damages.
What Brought Me to CVCC
Deciding to attend CVCC following graduating high school was not a decision I made out of haste, but a well-researched and thought out one. There were many different facets of CVCC I found appealing, but the most important were its location, size, and the scholarships I was offered. By going to CVCC, I am able to live at home and avoid paying any dorm or apartment costs, while keeping my current job and being able to use that money towards books and other expenses. CVCC is a familiar place, as my sister attended the school and I have also been able to tour and visit the school. During these visits, I have been able to see a school with a student to teacher ratio that allows students to have a more personal connection with their teacher, versus just being a face in the crowd. The most important thing in determining where I went to school, however, was the scholarships and financial aid I was offered. CVCC was able to offer me a scholarship covering full tuition, putting the final nail in the coffin of my decision.
