The Phenix City Story

While I had prior knowledge of the Phenix City story previous to reading it, I did not fully understand the utter turmoil the city was in. The city was run by corrupt politicians, being bribed for very little money. With this, almost anything went, becoming a lawless town out of a cowboy’s wildest dreams. If someone had a disagreement with another individual, one of them would surely soon be dead with no consequences. The Chattahoochee become a watery grave for hundreds of people, an astounding fact to think about. Prostitution and gambling were all over the city, with common townspeople standing no chance to rebel against the corruption that was ruining a once quiet, religious town. The most surprising thing of all was the “redneck mafia’ that controlled the city, killing as they please in broad daylight with no repercussions, a scary thing to think about.(McDowell).
