Two of my favorite villains come from my two favorite fictional universes, Star Wars and Batman. My favorite villain is the Joker, with a close second being Emperor Palpatine from the Star Wars franchise. These two villains do not share many characteristics, but they are both planners who are very smart and good in combat. One is grounded more in reality, the Joker, while the other has few elements of reality. Both are human, and what makes these characters so great differ with each one. What makes the Joker so great is his relationship with his nemeses, Batman. They are so incredibly similar, while also having very different fundamental moral codes. Palpatine is a great villain due to his power and how conniving he is. He is able to come to power through almost no means of violent force because of how he is able to manipulate people, and remains in power for so long because of his immense strength.
Battle of Columbus
The Battle of Columbus took place during the Civil War in Columbus, Georgia. The Battle of Columbus is ruled as technically the last battle to take place before the Civil War would come to an end in 1865. The battle is officially declared as the Battle of Columbus, though much of the actual action and fighting occurred in Girard. The battle is deemed as the Battle of Columbus however, due to the core reason for the battle, as it was being fought for the city of Columbus, Georgia. The battle was centered around the bridges that connected Columbus to Girard, now Phenix City, and much of the fighting actually took place across the bridge in Phenix City. The morning following the battle, much of the city would be destroyed and shook the core of the small riverside town. The Union was unaware the war was over, and later regretted destroying the town (“Battle of Columbus”).
Keys to College Success
This list brought up great points that I will make sure to make note of and consider during my journey during college. Some of these I have already put into use, such as talking to some of my professors early during the semester. Many of the other tips I have yet to put into use, but certainly try and plan on doing both at CVCC and when I graduate and enroll in a university, wherever that may be. A big thing on the list I really need to make happen is the making of friends and people to study with. I am somewhat of a loner, and generally prefer working and being on my own, but having friends to help push me will surely be a huge asset when taking on stressful situations that will inevitably happen during my journey in college (“9 Keys to College Success: What the Research Shows”)
Controversial Event
One of the biggest and most important events I have recently come across in the news in various forms is the potential impeachment of the president of the United States, Donald Trump. This comes after controversial events following how he dealt with issues and relations with the Ukraine, and I believe he threatened bad consequences if the impeachment process were to be carried out against him. I feel if this happens it will further polarize the country, and possibly lead to his re-election. I personally do not overtly care if he is to be re-elected, as I feel the president only has so much influence over the country. The system of checks and balances established in our triangle of government would prevent any irreversible, detrimental damage to the long term future of the country.
Strongest Source
My strongest source for my argumentative essay was an article published my the MedicalNewsToday written by Yvette Brazier detailing what exactly euthanasia and assisted suicide are. Brazier talked of how differing ideologies regarding both of these concepts faired in different parts of the world, as well as their histories. There are also statistics published in the article on how people who both have and have not dealt with the use and application of euthanasia feel on the topic. Brazier chronicles the history of euthanasia within the United States, and uses evidence in many examples to show how the opinion of euthanasia in the country is slowly changing. The statistics provided are probably what makes this source the strongest and most important for my essay, and will definitely help me in writing it (Brazier).
Writing Experiences
Although I was in this class for a short time, just over eight weeks, I have had many varying experiences writing. One of the better experiences was being able to make an A on every essay we had to write, as well as turning them all in before the deadline. Procrastination has been a problem that has troubled me throughout all of my schooling career, so being able to combat this in this course was a huge accomplishment personally. One thing that did not always go as well as I had wished was the actual content in some of my essays. I would occasionally get lazy with my writing and make errors I knew were wrong, but did not bother to correct these. They never costed me huge, but certainly annoyed me and are hopefully errors I can correct in the future.
How My Writing Has Changed
Throughout the first term of this semester, my writing has not through many major changes, as I have only been in the class for just over eight weeks. However, there are many things that have been both removed and added to how I write not only essays, but all written texts in general. One of the major things I have been able to better utilize and understand when writing is the use of citations. Before enrolling into this course, I had a very vague understanding of using citations, and did not really know how or when to use them. I now know how to cite in MLA format, as well as do in-text citations when referencing them in my body of work. Another thing I have learned during this time is that it is best to keep writing simple, clear, and concise. These are lessons I have been able to implement into the five essays I have written for this class
Things to do in Columbus, Georgia
I have not done all the activities listed on the list, yet some of them really intrigued me. One that particularly caught my eye was the food tour. This looks like a lot of fun, and I also happen to love food so that helps as well. The riverwalk is most likely my favorite attraction that was listed. I spend a lot of time around the riverwalk, and I even work in the area. The National Infantry Museum is a great attraction that is also free. I have went here many times, having a lot of fun and even learning a lot. This is a division/classification essay because it divides multiple information into categories on a particular topic (“15 Best Things to Do in Columbus, GA”).
Three types of friends
I have three main different types of best friends, who all play different yet significant roles in my life. One of my best friends, I stay in constant contact with, talking to them everyday and mostly all day. I hangout the most with this friend, and they also happen to be my partner. This is the friend I am most intimate and in frequent contact with. Another type of friend, I am in weekly contact with, but we do not hangout as often. When we hangout, however, things never change. We are always on the same page and never skip a beat having fun. This is my friend I have the most fun with and share the same sense of humor with. A third type of friend I have is not one person, but two or three. These are close friends who I do not have frequent contact with, but we have been able to remain friends over many, many years. We are able to go long times without speaking, yet maintain a good relationship.
Carson McCullers
Carson McCullers was born in Columbus, Georgia in 1917. She began learning how to play the piano at 10, with early aspirations to become a musician. She moved to New York City in 1934 to study music at the Julliard School of Music. While in New York, she became fascinated in literacy. At 19, she was able to have her first story published, “Wunderkid”, becoming successful at a very young age. She would marry James Reeves McCullers Jr., a childhood friend; both were heavy drinkers resulting in later problems. After publishing her first novel, she had tremendous success and her novel was widely praised. She separated from her husband and had mixed success with her second novel, resulting in a tough time for her personally (“Carson McCullers Biography”).
