Carson McCullers

Carson McCullers was born in Columbus, Georgia in 1917. She began learning how to play the piano at 10, with early aspirations to become a musician. She moved to New York City in 1934 to study music at the Julliard School of Music. While in New York, she became fascinated in literacy. At 19, she was able to have her first story published, “Wunderkid”, becoming successful at a very young age. She would marry James Reeves McCullers Jr., a childhood friend; both were heavy drinkers resulting in later problems. After publishing her first novel, she had tremendous success and her novel was widely praised. She separated from her husband and had mixed success with her second novel, resulting in a tough time for her personally (“Carson McCullers Biography”).
